Allie's Must-See List

This summer continues drawing closer to its end, and the impending arrival of fall feels a little bittersweet. The summer months brought us a variety of great movies ranging from The Great Gatsby (which I regrettably still haven’t seen) to Monsters University (which was well worth the wait). Luckily, there are a lot of really exciting movies set to be released in the next few months that will no doubt tempt my very limited free time once school starts.

Here are several movies I’m impatiently awaiting to hit theaters soon:

1. The Hunger Games-Catching Fire

I won’t say a lot about this one since we write about it a lot, but I’m still very excited for it to come out on November 22nd so I can see Jennifer Lawrence’s bad-assery in full force again. In case you missed it, you can find various trailers here and here.

This featurette has some great interviews with the cast and some film clips.

2. Elysium

This is definitely the wildcard movie on this list (and technically is a summer movie since it hits theaters at the end of the week), but I’m still excited for it.  Usually movies like this aren’t really my scene (pun intended) but I think it could be really interesting if the social issues featured in the movie are done well. Set in the year 2159, the movie centers around a divided humanity with two classes of people: the rich, who live on a space station named Elysium, and the poor who live in the ruins of Earth that the rich left behind. Cue star Matt Damon, who steps in to undertake a mission to help save a young girl’s life and bring equality to the population. After watching the trailer, I’m pretty intrigued.

3. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

I’ve also written about how excited I am about this movie so I won’t waste time reiterating that, but it looks so good that I couldn’t leave it off the list. Here’s a featurette with clips of the movie and cast discussing the film to curb some of the anticipation until the movie’s release on August 21st. And check out this 5 minute clip, it's pretty awesome.

4. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

I actually was disappointed when I realized this actually doesn’t come out until mid December, but I’m still really excited for it. I’ve recently fallen in love with the Lord of the Rings book trilogy along with the movie, and based on the trailer, this one looks pretty epic.

5. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Technically this also comes out in the winter, but I’m too eager for the return of Ron Burgundy to not include it as well. If you haven’t seen the original Anchorman by now, we probably can’t be friends, and you should stop reading this immediately and see it because it’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see Ron Burgundy and his cohorts in full force again. My only fear is that some of the jokes will go a little too far past the point of being funny (which seems to be a trend in comedies lately) but I think it should be good.
