The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

If you haven’t read the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, you definitely should. The books center around Clary Fray, a “mudane” who finds herself plummeted into the world of demon-killing Shadowhunters as she uncovers the secrets of her past. Readers find themselves transported into a new and interesting world just as Clary does in these books that I found impossible to put down. (I read the first 6 books of the series in 1 week because I couldn’t stand knowing what happened next.) I’m waiting slightly impatiently for the final book, City of Heavenly Fire, to be released on March 1, 2014.

The first book in the series, City of Bones, has been made into a movie that will hit theaters on August 21st. Lily Collins stars as Clary, and Jamie Campbell Bower stars as Jace Wayland. Other cast members include Lena Headey (Jocelyn Fray), Robert Sheehan (Simon Lewis), Kevin Zegers (Alec Lightwood), Kevin Durand (Emil Pangborn), Aidan Turner (Luke Garroway), and Jemima West (Isabelle Lightwood), plus others. I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen much from most of these actors so I’m not quite sure what to expect.

Lily Collins sort of fits the picture I had in my head of Clary and based on the trailer, and I think she’ll be good as the powerful lead female role.  I’m not sure how I feel about Jamie Campbell Bower cast as Jace; he doesn’t look at all like what I envisioned when reading the books and based on the trailer I’m uncertain if he’ll be able to capture the deep range of emotions I felt from Jace’s character in the books. I’m keeping an open mind until I see the movie, and I hope my prediction is proven wrong.

I’m really looking forward to the release of this movie to see how it shapes up next to the book. I’m generally in the camp that books are always better than their movie renditions, with the exception of Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, but I think these could be an exception as well. City of Ashes, the second book in the series, also has a movie currently under production.
