I’ve praised the works of Hank Green and Bernie Su many times before, but lately I have been extra excited about their new project, Emma Approved. Based off of Jane Austen’s novel Emma, Emma Approved takes the storyline and modernizes it with a vlog format to bring the story to a new audience. I loved The Lizzie Bennet Diaries which came out last year, but I think I may love Emma Approved more.

In the modern adaption, Emma Woodhouse makes a career out of her matchmaking talent landing high profile clients and finding them their perfect match. She works with Mr. Alex Knightly (George Knightly in the book) who doesn’t always approve of her medaling. When she hires a new assistant, Harriet, she takes her under her wing and makes her more confident. In Emma’s eyes she is making a better Harriet but her sneaky influence in Harriet’s love life may be pushing the limit too far.

What I love about the video series is the wonderful actress who plays Emma, Joanna Sotomura. She portrays the sometimes over-confident and ultimately big-hearted Emma well. She’s actually nominated for A Webby Award in Best Actress in a Comedy and she definitely deserves it.

Like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, characters in Emma Approved each have Twitter accounts in which they interact. Also “Emma” has a website which she posts outfit of the day photos of she and Harriet and publishes advice articles that correspond with the theme of each episode. If Hank Green and Bernie Su have done one thing right, it has been developing the interactivity within their series’. It makes for a new viewing experience that television just cannot offer.

There are only 20 episodes so far, so marathoning Emma Approved while you procrastinate studying for finals is not that crazy of an idea.
