Netflix Instant-Streaming movies for your day off

On this glorious day off from school, everyone should have ample time to procrastinate on tomorrow’s homework. And what better way to procrastinate than to fall into the black pit called Netflix? Here are a few of my favorite and highly recommended movies that are streaming live now.

Friends With Kids

My great love for Adam Scott is only further confirmed in this comedy about two friends Jason (Adam Scott) and Julie (Jennifer Westfeldt) who decide to have a kid together as more of a business deal. They split custody and don’t have to have the “messy” parts of marriage and love and feelings… or so they think. I highly highly recommend this movie for any and all lovers of a good rom-com. And Kristen Wiig is in it—what more could you ask for?

The Giant Mechanical Man

I think The Mindy Project’s Chris Messina is one of the most underrated actors in the biz. Honestly, check out his IMDB resume. He’s in all of your favorite movies unknowingly. In this film starring Messina, Tim (Chris Messina) is a street performer who is trying to convey his art in a way that is overlooked. Janice (The Office’s Jenna Fischer) is drifting in her life, not sure what her purpose is, and finds solace in watching The Giant Mechanical Man who is Tim unbeknownst to her. Tim and Janice both get jobs at the local zoo and the rest is rom-com history. I’m finding a pattern in my movie taste…

Safety Not Guaranteed

This movie was suggested by John Green one night via Twitter and so I decided to give it a look. It stars some of my favorite comedians like Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Mark Duplass (The Mindy Project), and Jake Johnson (New Girl). In this film, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) is an intern at a newspaper where they find an ad for a man seeking a partner to time travel with. Interested in making a good story but not taking the claim seriously, Darius and reporter Jeff (Jake Johnson) meet Kenneth (Mark Duplass) who claims he can time travel. Darius gets into Kenneth’s good graces and starts to train for time travel, finding out that maybe Kenneth has some truth to his claims. It was sweet and unpredictable and surprisingly deep. Also, Mark Duplass is the best and I love him dearly. He and his brother Jay Duplass write and direct their own movies such as Jeff Who Lives at Home and The Puffy Chair which you can stream online as well.

Straight A’s

I really don’t know how I didn’t hear about this movie when it originally came out, but this film packs a huge punch. Katherine (Anna Paquin) has a seemingly perfect life with a big house and two kids, and a husband who maybe works too much. Then a man rides up to the mansion on horseback and changes everything in five days. The man is Katherine’s high school love, Scott (Ryan Phillippe)… who just happens to be brothers with Katherine’s husband. I love a good movie that doesn’t reveal everything all at once and this movie is a perfect example of that. You’ll be shocked until the last minute.

Chalet Girl

For all of you Gossip Girl fans this is a cutesy teen rom-com starring Ed Westwick in all of his British glory. Chalet Girl follows Kim (Felicity Jones), an ex-skateboarder who gets a job at a ski resort. One of their guests happens to be Jonny (Ed Westwick) who finds himself having more fun with Kim on the slopes than fulfilling his rich-boy familial duties. I’m not saying this will make you rethink how you look at life by any means, but it’s funny and cute and Ed Westwick.
