My (not so) secret obsession with Reign

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but the CW and its shows have a strange hold on me. Most recently the show Reign which airs after The Vampire Diaries has sparked my interest. This article has been a long time coming, people.

If you’re not aware of the premise of this Gossip Girl-meets-period drama, it focuses on Mary Queen of Scots (Bloody Mary if you will) and her time at French court with the future king, Francis. While she’s there dark magic is taking place in the form of Nostradamus who predicts that Mary and Francis’ marriage will lead to Francis’ death. In an effort to save her son, Queen Catherine de Medici will do everything in her power to keep Francis and Mary apart… including trying to kill her multiple times.

BUT what is a CW drama without an angsty love triangle? Reign takes The Vampire Diaries route in the brother versus brother fight for Mary’s affections. Only, the difference is that while Francis is younger, he is the legitimate heir to the throne. His older brother, Sebastian is the bastard child of King Henry and Diane De Poitiers. The first half of the season didn’t really plot them against each other. Francis and Mary had their time and while Francis and Mary had their passion, Francis was incredibly back-and-forth… like sleeping with other people without qualms back-and-forth. Sebastian, or Bash, waited calmly, and now has his moment to shine with Mary in the second part of the season. I’m a Bash shipper if you couldn’t tell.

I mean look at him looking at this baby. How could you not love him?

The show combines historical(ish) material and magic in the most engaging way that you won’t be able to stop watching. I respect Mary as a strong character and while she has male attention, she is the bad ass epitome of “I don’t need no man” that the CW really needs more of. And did I mention all of the gorgeous gowns that Mary and her ladies wear? So beautiful.

Reign is not going to change how you look at the world by any means, but it is a great hour-long entertainment that (fingers crossed) will be renewed for a second season soon. Also, since I made my sister naturally start watching the show over break, we figured out that you can see most of the season between CWTV.com and Hulu. Happy watching and long may she reign!
