How I feel about the Beautiful Masterpiece turned movie

How do I even begin to explain my love for this book? It’s the perfect combination of hilarious yet meaningful dialogue, painfully relatable characters, and the touch of sadness that keeps you bawling for two hours after you’ve finished reading.

The book chronicles a moment in the lives of two teenagers with cancer—Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters. They meet at a cancer support group and the rest is history.

Now, let me tell you a little something about Augustus Waters. He’s the perfect man, skilled in the art of playing it cool. If you didn’t know personally that he had cancer, no one would think he did. And he says things like this.

And Hazel is beyond intelligent but not in a pretentious way. Her intelligence makes her feel more real, like she comes off the page. She’s beautiful but doesn’t know it, sort of like her outlook on life. They each teach each other so much about quality of life and what to live for and it’s really beautiful to be a part of that.

While I love all of author/YouTuber/professional nerd John Green’s work, The Fault In Our Stars is by far my favorite. At the risk of giving away too much, I’m going to skip to how I feel about the movie since that’s the pressing news.

TFIOS is being directed by Josh Boone, someone who John Green has given full support and often tweeted at him during the whole process. It’s rare that authors are so involved in the beginnings of the movie and I’m so glad that he has been. John has handled the casting news with grace, especially when people (very publicly) expressed their doubts in Secret Life of the American Teenager actress Shailene Woodley.

“Shailene Woodley is a brilliant actress and Golden Globe nominee. I cannot think of any 18-year-old actress who has received the kind of critical acclaim that she has. If the movie works, you’ll sit down in the theater and you won’t say, “Oh look it’s Shailene Woodley,” or, “Oh, look, it’s Tris from Divergent.” You’ll say, “Holy wow Hazel Grace.”” –John’s Tumblr.

I personally am excited to see Shailene portray the part. I’ve seen her in The Descendants, she can in fact act. We can’t let one terrible show that uses the word sex in every sentence influence our feelings about her. And look how gorgeous she is. Come on, she’ll be perfect.

Don't even get me started on Ansel Elgort (aka Augustus Waters)

Perfection. -------->

Casting aside, it came out recently that Bright Eyes would be scoring the film. I cannot tell you how exciting it is because, strangely enough, the band fits my same description as the book: meaningful, relatable, and… a large touch of sadness. Here’s hoping that they write some uplifting songs.

If you haven't gathered already, I’m excited. Yes the book will be better. And no I won’t be happy with every part of the movie. But hey, getting to see Augustus and Hazel interact in real life? That’s pretty amazing to me.
