10 Reasons to watch Witches of East End

Lifetime’s new series Witches of East End is another guilty pleasure to add to your must-watch list. With its magical intrigue and complex (and juicy) love plotlines, I’m dubbing Witches of East End my favorite new show of this season.

The plot, which is based off of a book of the same title by author Melissa De La Cruz, follows the sisters Freya (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) and Ingrid Beauchamp (Rachel Boston) who lead seemingly normal lives with their mother, Joanna (Julia Ormond). When their long-lost aunt Wendy (Madchen Amick) comes to town, things get more complicated and the sisters discover that they are, in fact witches. With this revelation we also figure out that the sisters are cursed. Joanna, their mother, is immortal and Wendy is forced to live out nine different deaths (and can shift back and forth from human to cat form). With Joanna’s immortality, she is cursed to watch Freya and Ingrid die and then become pregnant with them again each time the cycle continues. And, this is the longest time they have survived since the witch secret has been kept this cycle.

Here’s 10 reasons why you should tune in to Witches of East End:

1. Daniel di Tomasso

Not only is Killian my obvious winner of the Freya-Killian-Dash love triangle, but he has the ability to be the comedic relief along with adding sexy mystery to the show. He also favorite one of my tweets once so he’s pretty awesome in that regard as well.

2. Badass Female Magic

Pretty much all of the magic in this show is conducted by females which is pretty bad ass in my opinion. All of the Beauchamp witches are tough in their own right.

3. Based off the book series by Melissa De La Cruz

If any of you are like me, you devoured all of the vampire novels that came out in the Twilight era. Melissa De La Cruz was one of those authors (The Blue Bloods series), and I kept up with her books after I finished that series, including Witches of East End

4. The Vampire Diaries-esque love triangle

The good-brother-bad-brother triangle comes into play and, while Freya’s tarot cards said that one would be her soul mate and one her destroyer, I have a feeling that her fiancé Dash (Eric Winter) has some more secrets that will change her mind about which is Dash and which is Killian.

5. The family secrets

Nothing screams fantasy adventure like uncovering family secrets. And the Beauchamps are chalk-full of them.

6. The humor

For as intense as the plot can get at times, the writers do a nice job of sprinkling in good humor here and there to keep things a little on the lighter side.

7. The magic = consequences trope

This is always important for me when I’m reading/watching fantasy—that some semblance of realistic thought goes into the use of the supernatural. In this case, the fact that magic comes with severe consequences makes it more realistic (or as realistic as a show about magic can be.)

8. The original plotline

Out of all of the witch/ wizard books and shows I’ve watched I’ve never seen one where the mother is cursed to keep bearing and raising her children after they die for centuries. It’s an original edge that makes the show more enjoyable.

9. The sisterly bonds and love

I love that this show shows two generations of sisters who, while they have their differences, ultimately have each other’s back and will do anything for them.

10. It just got picked up for a second season!
